Gain A Very Strong Mindset As A Music Producer

An Indian Philosopher once wrote, “A strong mind locked to its target burns and destroys all obstacles on his way like a laser gun!” That is true for any goal you are trying to achieve. And it’s an absolute necessity especially in the music business.

So you must have a right mindset. You want to understand the big picture and map out a plan so that you can not only achieve your goals but be able to endure when tough times come.

Here are the mindsets that will help you on your journey:

Beginner

In the beginning of your life as a producer it might be slow going. You may need to take work for free.

To get your foot in the door you may need to do free work so you can practice on an artist. You’ll get real world experience recording and gain a tremendous amount of understanding. The artist may not be the best but you’ll be gaining that experience. A big key here is to love the learning.

Intermediate

Things are starting to move forward, you’re getting better, and even might start to get paid. The clients are better but you’re still not happy with your results. You’re still learning the gear. Still learning microphones, compressors, the DAW, and most of all you're learning to trust yourself. Your reputation is getting established and you’re making more connections. The key here is to keep moving and don't get discouraged. You may need to get a mentor or someone to help you get unstuck but you're getting better.

Professional

At this point you are established in the music sector in your city. People in the music scene know who you are. You’re making money. You have established rates and you are signing contracts. You should have a good studio with professional gear. Your clients should be alot better because at this point you can be more selective in your artist choices. This is where it gets fun and you’re producing music that you enjoy.
