I have a theory! I believe that when you're listening to someone sing, you’re actually hearing two things, the voice and the singing. Let me explain.
Great Voice
We were all born with a voice. We all can speak, grunt, moan, laugh, and even scream. The voice is an all natural, God given vocal instrument. It’s the basis of our tonal quality and verbal communication.
Your voice won’t change much. Obviously, it changes during adolescence leading to adulthood. But even then your basic tonal quality won’t really change.
Great Singer
Singing is different. Singing is HOW you use your voice. The notes you sing, how you sing those notes, and even tonal inflections. Here’s some good news, you can train to be a better singer. You can be trained to sing with good pitch. You can be trained to sing with proper inflections. You can maximize the quality of your natural voice through proper singing techniques.
Examples
Here are a few examples:
Bruno Mars: Great Voice, great singer
Taylor Swift: Average voice, great singer
Ariana Grande: Amazing voice, amazing singer
Bob Dylan: OK voice, good singer, but a GREAT songwriter.
