Art must become commerce. No truer words have been spoken. I’m sure we can all agree that if we are to continue making the art, at some point, we need to be compensated for that time and energy. Without it the demands of living in our society would require us to support ourselves in some other way besides doing what we were born to do in making art.
Fortunately, there are several ways to make money in the creative space and just one small piece of that is as a music producer. So here are three ways you can make money as a music producer.
1. Opening Your Studio to the Public
As a producer, you are usually working out of a studio. Even if that space is in your home, you’re working out of some kind of space. I propose that when you have down time you can rent that space and generate revenue. There are tons of artists, singers, musicians that all need space and expertise. When you’re not using your space I guarantee that there are people that would love to rent your space.
2. Selling Instrumental Tracks AKA: Beats
The beauty of the modern music industry is that there are no rules. You can build a beat, post it on social media, someone can see it and like it, then make you an offer. That happens time and time again.
Also, there are websites and companies that will buy your beat and sell them for you. There are so many options here that it’s definitely worth you exploring.
3. Playing as a Musician
As producers, we usually play some kind of instrument. As you network you can offer your music playing skills to artists, venue owners, and music directors. Even if you don't play an instrument, you could DJ or use your beat making gear to perform live. There is so much need out there for good players, musicians, and DJs. You should definitely reach out to you contacts and see what is available.
Making money is critical and as a producer you’ve really been given a gift. Use it, leverage it , and go out there and turn art into commerce.
