Niching Down as a Music Producer

An old proverb says, “The jack of all trades and the master of none”. And when it comes to producing music, no truer words have been spoken. In this recent episode of the podcast Raymond and Roman talk about the benefits of niching down and becoming more selective in your approach to the style and genre of music you produce.

Yes, we think WE CAN PRODUCE ANYTHING! But the truth is…..not really.

You’ll be able to produce one maybe two things GREAT but then the rest would suffer from a lack of not being familiar with the genre. Here are a few suggestions on how to niche down in your production and become great at a genra.

1. Produce What You Know

This is always a great place to start. What genre of music do you know the best? What genre have you spent the most time listening too? Who are your top 10 artists that made an impact on your music journey? This will definitely help you niche down and help you discover where your expertise really lies.

2. Your Musical Childhood

This is a vertical of the first one. What did you grow up listening to? What was on the radio when you were riding in the car with your parents? What artists were blasting on the stereo as you and your mom cleaned the house on Saturday morning? These questions speak to the earliest memory of music that you have and can help you niche down. These are the artists and songs that more than likely you’ve spent the most time listening to.
