Great question! Ultimately, that's up to you to decide. But in order to give an answer, first, we need to define what is a music producer and what is a beat maker.
So here are our definitions of those terms:
Music Producer
A music producer is defined as the one hired and responsible for executing and delivering the final product to a specified client. In this case the client would be the one who is commissioning and paying for the project. Clients would include a record label, independent artist, and movie company just to name a few.
The music producer doesn’t need to play an instrument or engineering a session. They are responsible for completing and turning in the project. To save money a music producer is free to perform on the tracks but that is not a requirement.
Beat Maker
A beat maker is the one who creates the track for the song. Beat makers usually do all of the musical computer programing and plays all of the individual parts within the track. They create the arrangement. They play the individual parts. And they create the musically structure for the track.
A beat maker is hired by a producer to build the initial track of a song. Or a beat maker can create beats at will and post them for sale.
Answering the question
Now that we have defined the terms it’s time to bring it all together. For us the main difference between a beat maker and music producer lays in the responsibility. Who is carrying what responsibility.
For example, if a record label comes to you and wants you to build the track, record the vocals, and turn in a track fully mixed, then you carry the responsibility for that project and you are the producer. If an artist comes to you and needs you to build out a track, then takes that track to someone else to mix and record vocals, then you are a beat maker. It’s defining who is carrying the responsibility for the final product.
So the real question is are you a music producer or are you a beat maker?
